How Do I Report a Fake Twitter Account?

Whether it's an account impersonating you, or just a fake account that doesn't belong in the community, here's how you can report all fake Twitter accounts.

Twitter is a social media platform with millions of users, including celebrities and political figures. When you're using Twitter, you might run into someone impersonating someone else. When this happens, you can easily report an account to help remove the user from the platform. Read on to learn how.

Step 1: Determine If You Need to Report an Account

On Twitter, an impersonation account is another way of saying a fake Twitter account. These accounts are made with the intention of portraying a person in a confusing or deceptive manner. Twitter doesn't take this lightly, and all impersonation accounts are subject to being permanently banned from the platform. If you run into a person impersonating someone else on Twitter or posting spam or abusive content, you can easily report the account and file a report against them.

Step 2: Go to the Fake Account's Profile

Once you've discovered a fake Twitter account, click on the user's tag or picture to go to the profile page. From there you can report the account by clicking the overflow icon (the three dots in a row) and selecting "Report." The next screen will ask you for more details about why you want to report the account. Twitter uses the information you provide to investigate the account and will follow up with you through email regarding the results of their investigation.

If the issue you want to report is related to a specific tweet or piece of media, you can report the tweet by clicking the overflow icon next to the tweet. From the menu that pops up, select "Report." As is the case with reporting a profile, you will have the chance to explain why the content is offensive, and Twitter will investigate.

Now that you know how easy it is to report a fake Twitter account, you can help fellow users by keeping Twitter that much safer. If you run into any issues while reporting, you can contact Twitter for more help. Twitter can be reached by phone as well as email, and the company has live chat representatives available who are happy to help you with any issues you run into.
