if you're moving, getting married or divorced, or otherwise changing your living circumstances, you may need to switch your National Grid power bills to your own name.

The easiest way to accomplish this is by calling National Grid Customer Service (If you live in New York City, use this number). Ideally, you should call about a week before needing to switch power services. When you call, have the following documentation ready:

  • Your full name and street address (or address of the location you wish to pay the bills for)
  • Your Social Security number
  • Your phone number
  • Your relocation date (if applicable).

If you are a tenant about to move into a rental unit, you may also need to provide your landlord's contact information and a copy of your lease. You'll also need your landlord's information if you're taking over bill payments for a business or other commercial building.

If you want to set up automatic bill payments, you'll also need to have your bank account information. Many customers wait to complete one billing cycle before switching to automatic payments (which you can set up after transferring service simply by calling customer service again).

Once you call, the customer service representative can talk you through switching bill service to your own name. Expect to wait on hold for about twenty minutes. You can set up payments for gas and electricity separately, or have them billed together.

If you don't wish to call, you can try using National Grid's online portal. Have all the same information ready, and fill in the requested fields as directed. If there's some other issue with your National Grid account, you can email Customer Service. This isn't as fast as calling; expect about a day and a half before receiving a response.
