One of the features users love about Facebook is the ability to join groups. Facebook groups allow people with similar interest to connect, share information, and enjoy interaction on a topic they're passionate about; however, there are times when a Facebook group may include information that is abusive or offensive. How do you report a Facebook group? You can report a group by contacting customer service here, or you can follow these steps to report the group from your Facebook page.

Facebook Community Standards

First, it's important to recognize just because you don't like something a group posts doesn't mean it will automatically be deleted or closed by Facebook. Facebook has guidelines that cover what is and isn't acceptable on the platform called "Community Standards." The following types of posts or photos go against Facebook Community Standards:

  1. Violence and Criminal Behavior: If a group promotes any type of violence or criminal activity, that group can be deactivated from the Facebook platform. Groups that call for criminal activity, violence, or fraud/deception can be flagged as abusive by users.
  2. Safety Violations: When groups are posting steps involving how to harm others or commit suicide, exploiting children in any way, bullying or harassing, exploiting adults, or violating other's privacy, users can report the group to Facebook for action.
  3. Objectionable Content: Examples of objectionable content by a group can be content that is sexist, racist, violent or graphic, or sexually exploitative. Groups that advocate for this type of content can be reported to Facebook.
  4. Integrity and Authenticity: Spamming, scamming, and spreading false or misleading news can get a group reported to Facebook for violations of Community Standards.
  5. Respecting Intellectual Property: Using another's intellectual property without the express consent of the creator can get a group deleted from Facebook for violations.
  6. Content Related: This section provides additional protections for minors and other requests on a case-by-case basis.

Reporting a Group

If you come across a group that you feel violates Facebook Community Standards, you can report that group by taking the following steps:

  1. On your newsfeed, select "Groups" or search for the group you wish to report in the search box.
  2. Below the cover photo, click on the three dots (...) to open a drop-down menu.
  3. Select "Report Group."
  4. In the next menu, select the reason you wish to report the group.
  5. Click "Next."
  6. Select "Done."

After You've Made a Report

After you've made your report, Facebook will review the content and see if it does or doesn't violate community standards. Facebook will then send a message to your Support Inbox with the decision made and what action (if any) was taken.

Reporting a group to Facebook is not a complicated process. The ability to make a report of potentially harmful or offensive content is one way Facebook works to keep users safe and happy while using the platform. For more information on reporting groups, contact customer service here.
